Give a Backcountry membership
membership · Proposed launch phase 1
Start from HomeReview as Visitor · Full workflow planned
User story
As a visitor, I want to give someone a Backcountry membership so they can redeem their own access.
Draft requirements for review · Updated 2026-10-19
What the app should do
- Persist the currently displayed gift-offer facts, price/term when known, eligibility and proposed labels alongside the shared offer catalog. Recipient redemption remains separately unbuilt until its own implementation.
- Separate the gift purchaser from its recipient.
- Explain the fixed gift term and the membership the recipient will receive.
- Provide a simulated redemption path that grants the recipient the intended access.
- Do not automatically renew the recipient unless they later choose their own plan; send no real payment or message in the demo.
What to check in the demo
Follow these steps from the role’s landing page through navigation and feature checks.
Begin on Visitor Home while signed out. If an account is active, use the account/workspace menu → Sign out. Public browsing does not require an account.
Navigation from public entry
- 01Begin on Visitor Home, without signing in.
- 02Scroll to the Home footer and select Subscribe under The magazine.
- 03Review the gift choices in the membership catalog. The separate purchaser/recipient redemption flow is still planned.
Feature checks start here
Gift membership flow — planned · Full workflow planned
Public-content reads are available for dev review; full story acceptance and stakeholder approval remain separate. Follow current navigation as far as available; remaining navigation and feature checks describe the intended flow once built.
- 04In Subscribe scroll to Gift the season. Use Review gift option on a print or connected gift and inspect the available offer information.
- 05Stop at the current preview. Purchaser/recipient setup, fulfillment/redemption and recipient entitlement are planned; do not expect a complete redemption form or automatic paid access.
- 06Check that the print gift is described as one-time and not auto-renewing. Store gift cards in Shop remain a different purchase.

What needs to be supported
- Persist the currently displayed gift-offer facts, price/term when known, eligibility and proposed labels alongside the shared offer catalog. Recipient redemption remains separately unbuilt until its own implementation.
How to verify in dev
- Verify published-only anonymous projection, no private/protected payload, stable IDs and links, missing/unpublished records, empty/loading/error UI, and no silent static fallback. Idempotent seed rerun preserves edited records; authenticated/dummy Home entry remains unchanged.
- Review the existing public gift offers and their current/proposed labels; do not treat catalog data as completed redemption or a real purchase.
Before this can work
- Begin on Visitor Home while signed out. If an account is active, use the account/workspace menu → Sign out. Public browsing does not require an account.
- Use Explore brief → Signup & upgrade tests for account-transition tests; it preserves separate sample data.
