Review as Visitor

User story

As a visitor, I want clear access rules for my role so I can use the features available to me and follow the correct registration or paid joining path.

Draft requirements for review · Updated 2026-10-19

What the app should do

  • The new-member review scenario begins signed out on the magazine’s Visitor Home. An authenticated account without a selected landing preference may also view that same public Home without losing its identity; public layout is not an account role or access grant.
  • Load Visitor Home editorial/marketing composition from published backend page sections referencing canonical works/issues/people/places/offers. Public reads expose only designated public bodies or safe paid teasers; no trial and no silent fixture fallback.
  • Signed-out arrival opens Visitor Home. After registration, both unpaid and paid accounts use the Member workspace; entitlement controls features.
  • Professional labels and organization ownership/management are separate account layers, not automatic paid-reader or HOL staff grants.
  • Show this role’s public or entitled content and a clear next step for restricted actions.
  • Visitor personal actions require a free account; free accounts do not receive paid participation; trusted active paid entitlement is required for protected member experiences.
  • Keep benefits and plans public, offer no trial, and keep professional identity separate from subscription access.
  • Normal dev uses genuine local authentication and trusted no-charge test entitlement. Remaining feature-specific access checks are verified separately; a role label or frontend selection never grants access.

What to check in the demo

Follow these steps from the role’s landing page through navigation and feature checks.

Review asStart here: Home

Begin on Visitor Home while signed out. If an account is active, use the account/workspace menu → Sign out. Public browsing does not require an account.

Navigation from public entry

  1. 01Begin on Visitor Home, without signing in.
  2. 02From this role’s Home use footer Explore → Stories. Open The Quiet Between Storms for public reading, then The Long Way In for the paid-content boundary.

Feature checks start here

Access rules for the selected account

October19 scoped dummy-account fixes are available in dev. Named Home/reload and truthful profile checks pass; exact no-preference Professional browser coverage awaits a suitable account. Full-story acceptance remains separate. Public-content reads are available for dev review; full story acceptance and stakeholder approval remain separate. Local real sign-in, trusted test membership transitions and selected gates are available for review. Real payment is absent; public-content backend conversion and remaining feature-specific gates are not yet accepted.

  1. 03Start the new-member scenario and see Visitor Home before plans/signup. Separately enter an authenticated no-preference account and see public Home while the account menu remains signed in; paid/private actions retain their own checks.
  2. 04Read The Quiet Between Storms without paid access. Visitor save/follow actions request an account; verified free accounts can retain public work.
  3. 05Open The Long Way In or Beyond the Frame without paid access and inspect Explore membership / Explore your upgrade. Benefits and plans stay public; there is no trial.
  4. 06With Casey Bennett verify paid reading separately. The demo role selector creates another genuine seeded account session, so it must not be used to claim that a free account was upgraded.
  5. 07Check group/event gates independently. Snow Lab exposes a reservation review form before its final membership check. Confirm final denial/upgrade separately; form entry alone neither grants a reservation nor proves the gate has failed.

Backend work for this feature

Backend development authorized · Dev only

What needs to be supported

  • The new-member review scenario begins signed out on the magazine’s Visitor Home. An authenticated account without a selected landing preference may also view that same public Home without losing its identity; public layout is not an account role or access grant.
  • Load Visitor Home editorial/marketing composition from published backend page sections referencing canonical works/issues/people/places/offers. Public reads expose only designated public bodies or safe paid teasers; no trial and no silent fixture fallback.

How to verify in dev

  1. Start the new-member scenario and see Visitor Home before plans/signup. Separately enter an authenticated no-preference account and see public Home while the account menu remains signed in; paid/private actions retain their own checks.
  2. Verify published-only anonymous projection, no private/protected payload, stable IDs and links, missing/unpublished records, empty/loading/error UI, and no silent static fallback. Idempotent seed rerun preserves edited records; authenticated/dummy Home entry remains unchanged.
  3. Begin signed out on Visitor Home, follow its editorial/discovery/membership links and reload; public work remains readable and paid work exposes only its allowed teaser.

Before this can work

  • Begin on Visitor Home while signed out. If an account is active, use the account/workspace menu → Sign out. Public browsing does not require an account.
  • Use Explore brief → Signup & upgrade tests for account-transition tests; it preserves separate sample data.
